In the past, student-athletes and other visitors to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) headquarters entered a lobby that did little to differentiate the office from any other. To remedy the situation, organizational leadership enlisted Perkins+Will Eva Maddox Branded Environments and Xibitz to create and install displays that clearly reflect the NCAA values and mission.
By using member schools’ artifacts – like jerseys and shoes, football helmets, documents and trophies – the new exhibits allow the public to experience memorabilia that was previously archived. Such objects are integrated into branded elements including a Student-Athlete Wall (which highlights how student-athlete success in academics, athletics and life is at the heart of the NCAA mission), and a Membership Wall (which features logos from the 1,100 member schools united around the goal of maximizing opportunities, well-being and lifelong success for college student-athletes).
Displays required many innovative solutions, including integrating new elements seamlessly into existing architecture. Among the techniques used were dimensional text, a specially developed cantilevered shelf that is held securely by a light weight finger jointed aluminum frame. Graphics were integrated by use of updatable encapsulated acrylic panels and Lambda duratran prints in lightboxes.
The result – where hundreds of employees interpret and support member legislation, run championships and manage programs benefitting student-athletes – is now an entry that demonstrates how the NCAA promotes fairness, safety, excellence, respect, integrity and responsibility on and off the field, and manifests a culture that helps achieve all of these ideals.
