Celebrating North Dakota’s Rich History

State Historical Society of North Dakota

North Dakota Heritage Center

The North Dakota Heritage Center is undergoing a significant expansion project, nearly doubling their exhibition gallery space. This project will allow the Museum to expand upon the history of North Dakota and its people across time and place, from the time when dinosaurs ruled through the development of today’s emerging industries.

Public engagement was a cornerstone of the development process as our team traveled to all corners of the state engaging the public in focus sessions seeking input on what stories should be told and how they should be presented. The resulting designs include a mix of traditional and contemporary exhibit techniques, including recreated environments, interactive media, and hands-on exhibits that respond to varied learning styles and audience needs.

[Working together.

Great Plains Exhibit Development Joint Venture, comprised of Xibitz, Lord Cultural Resources, and Taylor Studios is working collaboratively with stakeholders from the Museum, architect, and public to create exhibits in three new galleries totaling 33,000 square feet.]

    Let’s Talk

In the Adaptation Gallery: Geologic Time visitors will see how plants and animals were forced to adapt or did not survive the changing climate and landscape. From the monstrous sea creatures living in primordial oceans to the rise and extinction of dinosaurs, from tropical swamplands with crocodiles and palm trees to the appearance of mammals at the end of the ice age, this is the fascinating story of life in North Dakota.

Inspiration Gallery: Yesterday and Tomorrow will tell the story of North Dakota and its people through a variety of themes that continue to shape their history: agricultural innovation; industry and energy; settlement, immigration, and migration; conflict and war; our lives, our communities, and cultural expressions.

Innovation Gallery: Early Peoples is devoted to the Native peoples of North Dakota and will highlight the beauty and breadth of the State Museum’s collections. Encounter the tribes of North Dakota, both as they were before contact with European-Americans and also as the sovereign nations they are today.
